“Dance Memes” Icebreakers Collection

The Holistic Dance Teacher “Dance Meme” Icebreaker Collection is a fun way to get to know your students, using dance-based takes on popular Internet challenges, quizzes, and questions. 

This collection of games is designed to be a simple and fun way to help dancers get to know one another in classes and rehearsals. It is inspired by popular Internet memes and quizzes that you might see on Facebook and Instagram, all with a dance twist! The icebreakers are designed for students age 12+ who have some dance experience. Some familiarity with Internet memes would be helpful, but is definitely not required! In addition to being great icebreakers, the games in this collection also provide an opportunity for students to learn more about renowned dancers, dance companies and choreographers. If students are not familiar with the people and organizations listed in some of the games, invite them to check out their websites and social media pages, either individually or as a group. You can also use the format of the games to create your own icebreakers. A blank grid is provided for this purpose. This game is based on my experience as a dancer, dance educator, and choreographer working in ballet, modern, jazz, and jazz-derived forms including lyrical and contemporary. It is my hope that it will be applicable to a wide range of dance forms, although it does come from the perspective of Western Concert Dance.
